Gilding Grace: Applying Gold Leaf to Gypsum Ceiling Mouldings

Transforming a plain gypsum ceiling into a luxurious focal point begins with intricate moulding. First, ensure the carved patterns are clean, dry, and free of dust. Apply a thin, even layer of oil-based or water-based adhesive size specifically onto the raised reliefs of the moulding. Wait 30–60 minutes until the size becomes tacky but not wet.

Now comes the delicate part: gently lay sheets of gold leaf (or gold foil) over the sized areas. Use a soft, wide gilder’s brush to press the foil into every curve, crevice, and floral detail of the ceiling ornamentation. For hard-to-reach corners, a small cotton ball works wonders. Once the foil adheres, lightly brush away excess fragments with a clean brush. To reveal a seamless, radiant finish, buff the gilded surface with a soft cloth.

The result is a stunning ceiling that captures and reflects light, adding warmth, depth, and timeless elegance to any room—whether a classic salon or a modern luxury space.
